Colby Covington wants Kamaru Usman trilogy with win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272
UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington wants the Kamaru Usman trilogy fight with a win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272.
Covington and Usman have fought twice now, and though the champ has a 2-0 record over his rival, “Chaos” has still been the one man to give Usman his toughest fight inside the Octagon. After a spirited affair back at UFC 245, the pair recently fought to a rematch at UFC 268, with Usman winning a unanimous decision. That being said, while Usman captured victory, it was a very competitive fight.
Should Usman defeat top contender Leon Edwards in his rumored next fight and Covington gets past Masvidal, it’s conceivable that these two could fight a second time. Covington, in fact, is banking on it. Should he get past Masvidal in March at UFC 272, Covington wants the third fight against Usman.
“(A win over Masvidal) puts me right back in line to get another fight with Usman. The people saw in Madison Square Garden and New York City (at UFC 245) what happened in that fight. I easily won three rounds. I think I won four rounds. The only round he clearly won was the second. I won the first, the third, the fourth and the fifth, so the people saw that. They want that fight again,” Covington said on the UFC 270 weigh-in show (via MMAjunkie.com).
“There’s no one that’s on his level that can compete with him like I can, so this fight needs to happen again. There needs to be a trilogy because he hasn’t proved that he’s the better fighter. He hasn’t proved that he’s the best welterweight in the world, and there’s still unfinished business there. So I think after I finish Jorge Masvidal on March 5, it puts me right back in line to get my title shot.”
While it’s possible Covington could get the title shot, you also have to remember that top prospect Khamzat Chimaev is out there, not to mention other top contenders such as Vicente Luque. So Covington would be wise to put on an especially impressive performance against Masvidal in March at UFC 272.
Do you think Colby Covington deserves to get the trilogy fight with Kamaru Usman if he beats Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272?
