Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier 2 officially book for UFC 257 on Jan. 23
Conor McGregor and Dustin will officially have their rematch at UFC 257 on Jan. 23. MMA Fighting was first to report the news ending the months of rumors and speculation. According to the report, the two will fight at lightweight.
Earlier this week, UFC 256 lost its main event between Amanda Nunes and Megan Anderson when Nunes withdrew from the fight. According to MMA Fighting’s report, McGregor would still prefer to fight earlier than January and is pushing to have the fight moved up to December.
McGregor (22-4) and Poirier (26-6) previously fought in a featherweight bout on the main card of UFC 178 back in 2014. The fight was the birthplace of “Mystic Mac” as McGregor predicted a first-round knockout and that’s exactly how the fight went down.
Since their first meeting, both fighters have drastically improved.
McGregor went on to become an international sports icon and inside of the of the octagon he won an interim featherweight title, the undisputed featherweight title, and the lightweight championship. Of course he also had his 100 million dollar pay day when he boxed Floyd Mayweather in that time period as well.
The last time McGregor fought was in January and he only needed 40 seconds to finish Donald Cerrone in their welterweight main event bout at UFC 246.
Poirier went on to capture a title of his own last year in 2019 when he won the interim lightweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Max Holloway at UFC 236. He lost his undisputed title shot to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who also defeated McGregor.
Not long after losing to McGregor six years ago, Poirier moved up to lightweight in which he has posted a 10-2 record with one no contest in the mix. In that stretch he beat three former champions in Holloway, Eddie Alvarez and Anthony Pettis. He also holds a win over former interim champion Justin Gaethje.
UFC 257 is expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Right now the card is still being put together. One other matchup that has been confirmed for the card is a strawweight matchup between Michelle Waterson and Amanda Ribas.
