Cris Cyborg KO's Sinead Kavanagh, makes third defense of title at Bellator 271

Cris Cyborg explains why she won’t go back to the UFC

Bellator women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg explained why she won’t go back to the UFC.

Cyborg is Bellator’s women’s 145lbs champion, but that doesn’t mean she will end her combat sports career with the company. In fact, she competes in a boxing match this weekend against Simone Silva, and after she does boxing, she isn’t sure what is next for her as far as what sport or company she will sign with. If she does continue with MMA, however, she doesn’t believe she will sign with the UFC.

“That chapter is closed. They really don’t want to make the fights they want me to make, and they really don’t want to pay the fighters. So, if they start to pay the fighters, then maybe we can sit down, but I believe I have to think about my future than just think about my ego,” Cyborg said to MMAjunkie.com in a recent interview.

Cyborg and UFC president Dana White have butted heads in the past, so it’s no surprise to hear these types of comments from the legend. She has made it clear in the past that although she wants to fight the best opponents the sport has to offer, she is also all about respect. Based on her comments, financially at least, she’s not convinced the UFC is able to appreciate her as much as they truly should.

It will be interesting to see what’s next for Cyborg. It’s possible she could re-up with Bellator on a new deal, but a superfight against PFL champion Kayla Harrison is something that has been thrown out there for a while now. Of course, there is also boxing — if it goes well for her, perhaps she will focus on boxing instead of MMA for the remaining years of her combat sports career. We will soon find that out.

Where do you think Cris Cyborg will end up next after her contract with Bellator expires?
