Cris Cyborg vs. Felicia Spencer targeted for UFC 240 co-main event
Felicia Spencer called for it, Cris Cyborg responded positively shortly thereafter, and now it looks like the fight will happen in July.
According to an initial report from ESPN, UFC president Dana White stated that the fight was offered for UFC 240 July 27 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Sources have confirmed to MyMMANews.com that talks are, indeed, underway for the UFC’s return to Rogers Place. The women’s featherweight showdown is expected to be the co-main event of the night’s festivities.
Cyborg will make her return to the Octagon after suffering her first loss in over 13 years. The former UFC women’s featherweight champion took on women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in the co-main event of UFC 232 where she was finished in just under a minute during the heavy-duty slugfest. The Brazilian captured the UFC title when she defeated a gritty Tonya Evinger at UFC 214 in July 2017. The former champion — who also captured titles in Invicta and Strikeforce throughout her storied career — defended her title successfully against Holly Holm and Yana Kunitskaya before the end-of-the-year showdown with Nunes. ESPN is reporting that this is the final fight on Cyborg’s contract.
Spencer made her Octagon debut earlier this month when she defeated Megan Anderson via submission in the opening round at UFC Rochester. Prior to that, “Feenom” captured the Invicta FC featherweight title with a fourth round submission of Pam Sorenson in the main event of November 2018’s Invicta FC 32 event.
Following her win over Anderson, Spencer told TSN in a post-fight interview that “it would be an honor” to face Cyborg — a sentiment that her targeted opponent shared.
