Da'Mon Blackshear, twister, UFC Vegas 78

Da’Mon Blackshear secures just the third twister finish in UFC history, submits Jose Johnson at UFC Vegas 78

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, August 12, 2023, for UFC Vegas 78, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Headlining the event is a welterweight showdown between no. 10 ranked Vicente Luque (21-9-1) and former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos (32-14).

Co-headlining the event is a featherweight bout between Cub Swanson (28-13) and Hakeem Dawodu (13-3-1).

Our second bout going down on the preliminary card tonight was a bantamweight contest between Da’Mon Blackshear (14-5-1) and Jose Johnson (15-8).

Following victory in his second Contender Series appearance, Johnson came into his UFC debut tonight on a three-fight win streak, while Blackshear came in having gone 1-1-1 over his first three promotional outings.

Continue reading to see how this bantamweight bout went down:

Official Result: Da’Mon Blackshear def. Jose Johnson via submission (twister) at 3:47 of round one

Blackshear opens up the bout aggressively, getting right in the face of Johnson and throwing heavy leather. Johnson returns fire however and lands some good shots of his own. Blackshear goes in for a takedown, Johnson defending the initial shot well before Blackshear trips him down to the mat.

After eating a couple heavy elbows Johnson is back to his feet, before again being taken down.

Blackshear reigns down heavy shots from top position en route to nearly taking Johnson’s back. Instead of taking his back however he went for a twister submission, eventually finishing the fight with it, becoming just the third talent to ever secure a twister finish in UFC history behind featherweight contenders Chan Sung Jung and Bryce Mitchell.

After debuting Luana Santos TKO’d The Ultimate Fighter 30 winner Juliana Miller at 3:41 of round one to open up the prelims tonight, Da’Mon Blackshear picks up his second-straight promotional victory (and finish) tonight at UFC Vegas 78.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
