Dana White explains why he thinks Kamaru Usman is the welterweight GOAT
UFC president, Dana White believes current welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman is the division’s GOAT.
After Usman beat Gilbert Burns by TKO at UFC 258 to defend his welterweight title, he passed Georges St-Pierre for the longest winning streak at welterweight. Although St-Pierre has more title defenses than Usman, White believes “The Nigerian Nightmare” is the current welterweight GOAT.
“Yeah, I just think if you look at what this guy has done. Every time he fights he looks better and better. He’s literally fought everybody out there, and now he’s going for a second run on these guys. And the fight with him and Colby Covington is one of the best fights I’ve ever seen,” White said to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter (via BJPenn).
“This division is stacked with killers right now. And like I said, the fight with him and Colby Covington,” White continued. “Love him or hate him, he’s one of the best fighters in the world. He’s a very, very good fighter and that fight was incredible. Both guys had to dig deep in that fight. It was one of the best fights I’ve ever seen, ever.”
Although Kamaru Usman doesn’t have as many title defenses as St-Pierre, part of the reason is due to the fact it took him a lot more fights to get a shot. He even said he nearly retired because none of the top fighters would fight him because they knew he was a bad matchup.
Usman is looking to defend his welterweight title against Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 261 in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday. If The Nigerian Nightmare wins, the rematch with Colby Covington is next according to White. At this point, Usman is now having to rematch all the top contenders as he has already beaten the majority of the top-10.
