Dana White keen on booking Beneil Dariush vs. Mateusz Gamrot
UFC president Dana White said that he is keen on booking a lightweight bout between top-10 ranked fighters Beneil Dariush and Mateusz Gamrot.
Gamrot is coming off of a career-best victory over highly-touted prospect Arman Tsarukyan, who he defeated via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC Vegas 57. Following his victory, Gamrot took the mic to call out former UFC interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje, calling him “the most brutal guy” in the UFC lightweight division. However, it looks like the promotion has another bout in mind for the Pole.
According to White, the UFC hopes to book the No. 8 ranked Gamrot against the No. 6 ranked Dariush.
“I think what I love is I love Gamrot-Dariush, when he comes back,” White told Yahoo! Sports in a recent interview, while also mentioning he has no clue what Dariush’s current health status is.
Remember, Dariush was supposed to fight Islam Makhachev in the main event of a UFC Fight Night event earlier this year, but he injured his leg and ankle and was forced to withdraw from the bout. White originally was intending to rebook the Dariush vs. Makhachev bout, but it appears as though Makhachev is next in line to fight UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, leaving Dariush in need of a new opponent. Enter Gamrot.
Both Dariush and Gamrot are incredible grapplers who also have great striking skills, which would make for an absolutely phenomenal fight between the two lightweights. The hope is that Dariush will be able to heal up and get back into the Octagon by the end of the year. If that’s the case, then it would make sense for Gamrot to take the fight against a higher-ranked opponent as he looks to keep moving up the ladder of the lightweight division.
