Dana White “pissed off” at fake retirement act by Clay Guida
Following a unanimous decision loss to Rafa Garcia to open up the main card at UFC Kansas City on Saturday night, longtime organizational fighter Clay Guida did something that made UFC President Dana White really uncomfortable.
While Garcia was being interviewed inside the octagon by former two-division champion turned commentator Daniel Cormier, Guida idly stoodby. Normally the losing fighter exits the octagon unless of course they are going to make a special announcement.
With Clay Guida remaining inside the cage and taking off his fight gloves, Cormier assumed that “the Carpenter” was retiring from the sport just as Ed Herman and Zak Cummings did earlier in the night.
“I tricked you guys,” Guida said to the audience gather at the T-Mobile Center. “There ain’t no way I’m walking away yet. I want to congratulate this young man Rafa Garcia and I want to ask Rafa Garcia to trade gloves with me because that was a heck of a performance by him.”
At the event’s post-fight press conference, White addressed the situation.
“That pissed me off actually, to be honest with you,” White said when reacting to Guida’s fakeout. “No, that pissed me off.
“I like [Clay Guida], he’s a nice guy, but you’re faking your retirement so you can say f****** happy birthday to somebody?”
“We’re running a live event here, you know what I mean?” White said. “I was not happy about that.
“He was saying happy birthday to somebody or something. That was not good.”
