Deiveson Figueiredo confirms desire to move to 135lbs following UFC 283
UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo confirmed his desire up to move to 135lbs following his UFC 283 title fight.
Figueiredo takes on his rival Brandon Moreno in the co-main event of this weekend’s UFC 283 card in Brazil. It’s the fourth fight between the two, with the pair previously going 1-1-1 in their first three fights. The fourth fight will prove once and for all who the better fighter is, and it will also crown the undisputed UFC flyweight champion. Figueiredo holds the belt right now, while Moreno holds the interim belt.
While a win over Moreno would keep Figueiredo at the top of the flyweight food chain, he plans on making the move up to bantamweight following the fight. The Brazilian has had weight-cutting issues in the past, and now he is making it clear that he wants to move up to 135lbs. Speaking to AG Fight in a recent interview, Figueiredo confirmed his desire to move up to the bantamweight division. However, while he wants a title shot at 135lbs, he won’t fight his teammate Henry Cejudo.
“My focus is to move up the category. It’s doing this fight and asking to do a fight, testing myself in the top division. That doesn’t mean I’m going to get out of mine. I want to test myself. If Cejudo has the belt, he’s a guy who’s like a brother to me. I would never fight him. Today, he’s my brother, but even so, I wanted to move up in the category to fight someone. If Cejudo doesn’t get the belt, I’ll ask to fight for the belt. It’s belt to belt, I’m the owner of the bottom one and I want to fight for the top one. Now, if I’m with Cejudo, I’ll leave the belt with my brother and ask for another bantamweight fighter to fight,” Figueiredo said.
