Donald Cerrone Calls Conor McGregor a Prima Donna
Donald Cerrone has never been one not ready to fight anytime or anywhere. The “I know a guy” quote the lightweight likes to use comes from him willing to step into fights on short notice simply because he loves what he does. The same cannot be said for Conor McGregor and that is starting to wear on the patience of Cerrone.
Cerrone made his return to lightweight in January where he finished Alex Hernandez in the second round of their fight. Since then, the number nine UFC ranked lightweight and McGregor (currently ranked number two in the UFC lightweight rankings were entertaining a fight with one another. However, as of late the news coming from the UFC is that the fight is not happening and the reason is that McGregor wants the fight to be the main event.
Speaking with ESPN, Cerrone confirmed that was the case and said, “I don’t know if it’s an ego thing or a status thing for him. I don’t give a s**t, I’ll fight anyone, anywhere, and I stand by that all the time.”
“I guess he’s a prima donna and only takes main event spots. I don’t know.”- Donald Cerrone
The two seemed to agree to fight on social media and it seems, at least for McGregor title or no title he has to be the top of the card. Most UFC pay-per-views as of late have featured a title (or interim title) fight of some sort and that could be why McGregor has not agreed to fight. However, no one could argue that a McGregor fight would not draw in numbers by putting him as the main event for a pay-per-view.
Cerrone is more annoyed that he thought they were not on the same page to fight; only to find out card placement was an issue. I get it, you want to stay relevant by putting it out there, said Cerrone, then added, “But then you can’t go radio silent. Sack up. Sign the f**cking paper.”
Main eventing a pay-per-view could benefit both fighters financially but that never seemed to be something Cerrone made a priority over fighting. Cerrone said he would not wait past July for McGregor, as there are plenty of ranked fighters likely to take a fight no matter where it is on the card.
