Dricus Du Plessis says he’s “going out there to finish” Robert Whittaker at UFC 290
Top-ranked middleweight contender Dricus Du Plessis said that he’s “going out there to finish” former divisional champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 290.
Du Plessis and Whittaker meet in a middleweight title eliminator in Las Vegas just over a week from now, with the winner getting the next crack at UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. For Du Plessis, this fight represents a massive opportunity for him to beat the former champ in Whittaker and prove without a doubt that he is deserving of getting a crack at the belt. The South African fighter has a 5-0 record in the UFC, with four finishes, but he still needs a marquee win over an elite fighter to really put a stamp on getting a title shot, and Whittaker is the ideal opponent.
Speaking to The Schmo in a recent interview, Du Plessis said that his goal is to not only beat Whittaker, but to finish him, and prove to everyone that he is “the biggest dog” when it comes to the list of title contenders down at 185 lbs.
“I’m going out there to finish. If you look at my record, I’m not going out there to chase decisions. I’m going out there to finish Robert Whittaker. I think it’s gonna be one heck of a fight. At the end of the day, he has a lot of dog, I have a lot of dog, and we’ll see who’s the biggest dog. At the end of the day, I know that’s me always, every single time,” Du Plessis said (via BJPenn.com).
Whittaker may not be the champion anymore, but he is clearly still one of the best in the world at middleweight, and a win over Du Plessis would likely earn him a third crack at Adesanya. However, Du Plessis is going to do everything in his power to stop that from happening at UFC 290, and regardless of who wins the fight, it should be fun for the fans.
