Eddie Alvarez parts ways with ONE Championship, tests free agency
Former Bellator MMA and UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has parted ways with Singapore based mixed martial arts promotion ONE Championship. The South China Morning Post was first to report the news, which was then followed up and confirmed by a social media post by Alvarez himself.
“I am no longer with ONE,” he wrote. “We parted ways amicably and I remain on good terms with the ONE team.
“I want to thank Chatri [Sityodtong, ONE chairman and CEO] for the opportunity and I look forward to watching their continued success. I’m officially a free agent and ready to hunt.”
Alvarez had not fought for ONE since April 2021 and went 1-2 with 1 no contest in his four fights with the promotion.
Despite a rough start in ONE, Alvarez said in July as a press conference that he was still hoping to get details of next fight worked out soon, and to win the promotion’s lightweight title.
“That’s why I’m in L.A. We’re gonna figure this out while I’m here,” he said.
Speaking to members of the media, two former two-promotion champion was asked if there has been any change in his personal goals under the ONE Championship banner as he prepares for his return to the circle.
“The goal has always been the triple crown,” Alvarez said. “I’ve fought for every organization. I’ve pretty much become the champion in every organization. That’s always been the main goal from the gate, but I think ONE is making strides and for right now I think it’s about getting a footprint here in the United States and this is the start of it right here with Amazon Prime.”
“The Underground King” Alvarez first joined ONE in 2019 after losing his final UFC bout against Dustin Poirier in July 2018. He has fought a who’s who list of competitors at 155-pounds including Poirier, Justin Gaethje, Conor McGregor, Michael Chandler, Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Rafael dos Anjos, Gilbert Melendez, Patricky Pitbull, Shinya Aoki, and others.
