Eddie Alvarez nearing ONE Championship return, seeks ‘Triple Crown’
Former UFC and Bellator MMA lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez has been missing in action since a unanimous decision loss to Rae Yoon Ok at ONE on TNT 4 in April 2021.
“The Underground King” was the Novo in Downtown Los Angeles for ONE Championship’s press conference where the promotion announced the full ONE on Prime Video 2022 schedule.
When asked about his potential return, Alvarez got straight to the point.
“That’s why I’m in L.A. We’re gonna figure this out while I’m here,” he said.
Speaking to members of the media, two former two-promotion champion was asked if there has been any change in his personal goals under the ONE Championship banner as he prepares for his return to the circle.
“The goal has always been the triple crown,” Alvarez said. “I’ve fought for every organization. I’ve pretty much become the champion in every organization. That’s always been the main goal from the gate, but I think ONE is making strides and for right now I think it’s about getting a footprint here in the United States and this is the start of it right here with Amazon Prime.”
If Alvarez is to make a run for that third major world title he will need to pick up a few wins before getting that championship opportunity.
Since departing the UFC and arriving at ONE, Alvarez has won just one contest. He suffered defeat at the hands of Timofey Nastyukhin in his promotional debut, followed by a first-round submission win over former champion Eduard Folayang. Alvarez then stumbled again as an illegal strike caused his fight against Iuri Lapicus to be ruled a no-contest. He then returned to the circle again to suffer that loss little more than a year ago.
