Elias Theodorou talks therapeutic use exemption: “I think I’m on the right side of history”
Mixed Martial Artist and cannabis activist, Elias Theodorou returned to the cage for the first time since 2019 when he faced former fellow UFC veteran, Matt Dwyer in March at Rise Fighting Championship 6.
Contrary to his other previous professional outings, Theodorou entered this contest without fear or worry of testing positive for cannabis; “afforded to me by my fundamental right as a Canadian to medicate as prescribed by my doctor,” he explains. This bout would mark the first time a mixed martial artist would ever compete with a therapeutic use exemption for cannabis.
Theodorou’s bout was a win before the bell ever sounded as history was being made before our eyes. “When I became a free agent, I became an agent of change in a different way,” he expresses. Hoping this puts him and other athletes one step closer to “being the knockout punch to some of the restrictions in other jurisdictions,” he passionately explains the inequality of medical standards on cannabis in sports.
Although a dominating win over Dwyer, stopping him via TKO in the third would sweeten the deal. Winning the battle, he’s fought for years on end to medicate was “Honestly, cathartic in some ways,” Theodorou reflects on his monumental feat. “I had opportunities to fight for larger organizations but what I wanted to do was finish what I started. Get my cannabis sanction validated in B.C. (British Colombia), and I did. Then get a therapeutic use exemption approved in the states, which I now have recently done in Colorado, again. And I look to validate that once more. There or any other jurisdiction I end up getting approved in for cannabis.”
Steadfast since he started his battle for medical equality, Theodorou expresses, “It took 4 years, 5 years to get the first win with British Colombia then only a couple months later, six months later for the first one in the US,” he explains. “And I’m going to keep fighting for that cause,” he insists.
“I think I’m on the right side of history being in the cannabis side of history and that’s what I’m going to continue to do,” Theodorou confesses. “And I’m lucky enough to do what I love!”
