Aguilera had been a long-time staple of the MMA regional scene before being tapped to come in and fight Anthony Ivy last June on short notice. Christian Aguilera took the UFC community by storm with dispatching Ivy in under a minute. Then, in August, Aguilera lost to Sean Brady via rear naked choke in round two. A win over Alves would have had Aguilera back in the win column with an upward trajectory.
Warlley Alves was looking to turn things around against Christian Aguilera at Fight Island. His last fight was a loss via triangle to Randy Brown. Aguilera would have been a step in the right direction for Alves.
Christian Aguilera on Fight Island
The UFC returns on the 16th for a new stint on Fight Island and it’s first fights of the 2021 year. Two fights have already been pulled from the card in addition to Christian Aguilera and Warlley Alves. Tim Elliott and Jordan Espinosa was pulled due to a positive COVID test from Espinosa. Then Santiago Ponzinibbio and Muslim Salikhov was called off when Salikhov started to display COVID-like symptoms. Salikhov was replaced by Jingliang Li.
Regardless of the pullouts, the Fight Island card is still loaded up. Max Holloway makes his return after dropping two straight to now-champion, Alexander Volkanovski. He takes on the serious contender, Calvin Kattar. Also on the card is Ricky Simon and Brian Kelleher. Joaquin Buckley returns as well after his Knockout of the Year win over Impa Kasanganay and a win over Jordan Wright. He takes on former IMMAF champion Alessio Di Chirico.
