Fabian Edwards vs Robert Fonseca Set for Bellator 270 in Dublin
A matchup between Fabian “The Assassin” Edwards (9-2) and Robert “Pato” Fonseca (13-4) has been added to Bellator 270, which takes place next Friday, 5th November at 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. MyMMANews confirmed the fight on Thursday evening.
Originally, Edwards was reportedly scheduled to face Charlie Ward (9-4). Though the matchup was never officially announced by Bellator (nor either fighter), the Ward vs Edwards matchup was listed in multiple Bellator 270 press releases. However, I broke the news yesterday that the contest was not to be due to an injury Ward suffered a number of weeks ago.

Per sources, Ward suffered a torn bicep close to a month ago.

When contacted, Bellator officials confirmed the cancellation of the bout, and attention turned to Edwards’ new opponent. Enter, Robert Fonseca. The 38-year-old Brazilian steps in on just over a week’s notice to take on Edwards. In a remarkable turnaround, Fonseca will compete for the second time in just 15 days when he steps into the Dublin cage. “Pato” scored a 1st-round KO over Josemberg Freitas (1-4) in the main event of Estrada Shooto Brasil last Thursday.

Since his amateur MMA days, Team Renegade’s Fabian Edwards was widely touted as one of the bright prospects coming out of the UK. The younger brother of UFC welterweight contender Leon, Edwards got off to a blistering start in his career, stringing together an unblemished 10-fight amateur career before racing to another undefeated 9-0 record on the pro scene. However, the 28-year-old Birmingham native hit a slump in 2020, losing back-to-back decisions against Costello Van Steenis and Austin Vanderford. Edwards will be looking to snap losing streak when he faces Fonseca next Friday night.
Speaking to MyMMANews.com, Edwards made his intentions clear that he’s coming to put on a show:
“I know nothing about this man, but I do know I’m leaving him bloody. This one has to be a violent comeback!”
