Flex Fights: Long Island to Strong Island
The Long Island Litany
Matt Serra put mixed martial arts in Long Island, NY on the map when he upset GSP to become the new UFC Welterweight champion. At the time, most people did not know where Matt Serra hailed from. He could have been from Antarctica as far as the Vegas crowd could care, they they were just shocked GSP was knocked out.
Serra’s gym would go on to grow notoriety and produce multiple pupils like him to become UFC champions, like Chris Weidman and Aljamain Sterling. MMA is a young and growing sport, and as MMA grows, so does New York’s popularity and enthusiasm in MMA.
