Francis Ngannou says “it’s hard to be impressed” by rival Ciryl Gane
UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou says “it’s hard to be impressed” by rival Ciryl Gane.
Ngannou was in France for the UFC Paris card that took place this past Saturday. Of course, the headliner of the event saw Gane take on fellow heavyweight contender Tai Tuivasa. In what was a slugfest on the feet between two knockout artists, Gane won the fight via third-round TKO. It was a fun fight to watch, but it appears as though Ngannou is not impressed.
Speaking to the ESPN+ post-fight show for UFC Paris, Ngannou was asked his thoughts on Gane’s performance. Although “The Predator” admits that “Bon Gamin” is a great fighter, he is also not exactly impressed by a fighter who he has already defeated back at UFC 270.
“I know he’s a great fighter. It’s hard to respond to that question for the guy that I beat – if I’m impressed with him. He’s here for a reason. I fought him for a reason because he was probably the No. 1 contender. Yes, he’s good, but I’m the champ. Yeah, so it’s really hard to be impressed.” Ngannou said (via MMAjunkie.com).
Ngannou and Gane seem like they will be rivals for a long time, so it will be interesting to see if these two end up meeting inside the Octagon for a second time sometime in the future.
Of course, Ngannou is still not ready to fight again after undergoing knee surgery earlier this year. The hope is that he gets back into the cage by the end of the year or early next year, and former light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones is a potential option. However, Gane will be right there waiting for Ngannou and his second chance at winning the heavyweight title.
Do you think we will see a rematch between Francis Ngannou and Ciryl Gane in 2023, and who do you think will win if they fight again?
