Grant Dawson talks last second win at UFC Vegas 22
Grant Dawson had one of the most incredible finishes in the history of the UFC last Saturday night at UFC Vegas 22. With just one second left in the third and final round of the fight, Dawson knocked out Leonardo Santos with heavy ground and pound. A flurry of hard hits within the last ten seconds of the fight put Santos out while his mouthpiece went flying out into the air. Dawson is riding high following this huge win and sat down to chat about it with My MMA News.
“It’s awesome, nothing like that has ever happened to me in fighting so it’s a new experience,” Dawson said. “It was more like shock honestly. Like ‘Holy cow, that just happened.’ That stuff happens in movies or to other people so it was really cool. I’m definitely going to remember it for the rest of my life.”
Dawson is hoping this big win can carry over momentum to his next fight. After the win, he called out Clay Guida, but any opponent who moves the needle will do.
“I definitely think it boosted me up in the MMA community,” Dawson explained. “It boosted me up on the rankings, and it boosted me up on social media so I think there will be a lot more expected of me going into these next fights. I’m ready to prove people right and I’m ready to make it happen.”
Prior to this bout, Dawson was fighting at featherweight, with his last two at a catchweight. Moving forward, lightweight will be where he will stay. The division is one of the toughest in all of the UFC, but that doesn’t scare Dawson, in fact, just the opposite.
“I think that lightweight is a really great fit for me, it’s not too big, not too small,” Dawson said. “I think I’m going to fill into the weight class a lot more. I actually think I’ll be even bigger my next fight. I definitely think lightweight is the move and I’m excited to see where I go, not to mention winning a belt at lightweight is so impressive because of how deep the weight class is.”
Moving forward Dawson is looking to make his way up the lightweight ranks. He wants to fight four times in 2021. There is no doubt that Dawson can bring exciting fights and now they all know that he is a dangerous fighter no matter how late the fight goes. He is a force to be reckoned with in the stacked 155-pound division.
