Gregor Gillespie poses challenge to Conor McGregor: “If you want to go fishing and then have a fight, I’m down for that”
UFC lightweight Gregor Gillespie posed a challenge to Conor McGregor, pitching the idea of a fishing competition followed by a fight.
Gillespie is known as the self-proclaimed best fisherman in the UFC and often posts photos of his impressive catches on his social media. Following his recent UFC Vegas 26 victory over Diego Ferreira via thrilling second-round submission, Gillespie said in his post-fight interview that he was the best fisherman on the roster. It was something which McGregor disagreed with when he tweeted that night that Gillespie was “not even close” to being the sport’s top fisherman.
McGregor will be in line for a UFC lightweight title shot against new champion Charles Oliveira should he get past Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 this summer, but that isn’t stopping Gillespie from throwing out a challenge to “Notorious.” Speaking to James Lynch in a recent interview following his win over Ferreira, Gillespie posed an open challenge to McGregor for a fishing contest followed by a fight.
“McGregor calling me out for a fishing thing was pretty cool. Obviously, that’s a fight that I would love to get someday. I don’t know how you’d approach having a fishing competition when someone’s in Ireland and I’m in America. I think he’s probably poking fun at me a bit. But if you want to go fishing and then have a fight, I’m down for that, too,” Gillespie said.
Gillespie has a 14-1 record as a professional MMA fighter which includes a 7-1 record in the Octagon. The win over Ferreira, which took place at a 160.5lbs catchweight after his opponent missed weight, was an incredible victory for Gillespie considering he hadn’t fought since a head kick KO loss to Kevin Lee at UFC 244 in November 2019. At 34 years of age, Gillespie knows that if he’s going to make a run for the top of the division, it starts now, so might as well call out McGregor and see what comes of it.
