Islam Makhachev, Alexander Volkanovski take shots at one another ahead of potential fight: ‘enjoy your P4P first spot for now’
Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski are hyping up their potential title fight by taking shots at one another on social media.
After Makhachev scored a second-round submission win over Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 to become the new lightweight champ, he called out Alexander Volkanovski. The featherweight champ was the backup fighter for the bout and went into the Octagon afterwards to add some hype to the matchup.
Now, the two have begun trash-talking one another including Volkanovski questioning if Makhachev will actually sign the contract.
Are you a man of your word? @MAKHACHEVMMA? 🇦🇺 Let’s make it happen! ✍️ #UFC284

“Are you a man of your word? @MAKHACHEVMMA? Let’s make it happen! #UFC284,” Volkanovski wrote on Twitter.
To no surprise, Makhachev issued a response and told him he’ll sign the deal once he gets the offer.
The second I receive the paper, I will sign it, don’t worry ✏️ enjoy your P4P first spot for now 😉 https://t.co/7J4kUCKuE5

“The second I receive the paper, I will sign it, don’t worry. enjoy your P4P first spot for now,” Makhachev responded.
Although it seemed like that is where the trash-talking would end, Makhachev then took to social media to pose some doubt about the fight happening. The lightweight champ claims the UFC thinks Volkanovski is too small for the fight to happen.
@alexvolkanovski just make sure your people convince UFC that you can compete with me. From what I heard, they think you too small 👀

If Islam Makhachev vs. Alexander Volkanovski happens, it would likely be the main event of UFC 284 in Perth, Australia. It would be a massive fight and would determine the top pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC.
Makhachev (23-1) is on an 11-fight winning streak and coming off the win over Oliveira. On the winning streak, he holds notable wins over Dan Hooker, Bobby Green, Thiago Moises, and Drew Dober among others.
