Shore (16-1) won the first 16 fights of his pro MMA career before finally losing by submission to Ricky Simon at UFC Long Island back in July. The 27-year-old Wales native was 5-0 in the Octagon prior to that defeat, so it was surprising to see him get finished in the loss. That being said, he’s young enough and talented enough to get back into the win column, although Phillips is a tough fight for anyone in the weight class.
Phillips (10-2) submitted Marcelo Rojo in his last fight to improve his overall UFC record to 4-1. The 27-year-old American is one of the most dynamic and well-rounded fighters in the weight class as possesses impressive striking skills to go along with a phenomenal ground game. Other than a close decision loss to Raulian Paiva last year, Phillips has looked great in the Octagon.
From an odds perspective, it will be interesting to see what the betting odds are for this fight given both men are generally favored to win their bouts. Given Phillips has a lethal submission game and Shore is coming off of a submission loss to Simon, “The Matrix” may be the slight favorite in this one, but it’s certainly a close and competitive matchup.
