James Vick gets shock at Karate Combat 36 Weigh-Ins
All fighters were on weight today at the Karate Combat 36 official pre-fight weigh-ins at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.
Lyoto Machida protege Bruno ‘The Tiger’ Souza takes a shot at getting onto the title-fight fast track in tomorrow night’s main event when he faces former champion Edgars ‘The Bearslayer’ Skrivers.
Coming off his first loss in Karate Combat, in which he lost the title to Souza’s countryman Luiz ‘Pitbull’ Rocha earlier this year, Skrivers wants a title rematch as soon as possible.
Both fighters see tomorrow night’s bout as the pathway to that title shot, but Skrivers has warned UFC veteran and former LFA champion Souza that he is nobody’s steppingstone.
“Obviously he’s a high-level fighter and I think this is going to be a really good fight, but nobody can use me as a steppingstone and he’s going to learn that the hard way tomorrow night. First, I have to smash this guy and then my next step is to go and get my title back,” said Souza.
Also weighing in today was James Vick. The 14-fight UFC veteran is making his Karate Combat debut and faces the heavy-handed welterweight Jorge Perez, who has two KO wins in Karate Combat and is looking for his third.
Perez – a full head shorter than the towering 6’4 Vick – has taken inspiration from history as he heads into battle. He arrived for the weigh-in wearing ancient warrior attire and carrying a slingshot, conjuring the image of David setting forth to slay the giant Goliath in scripture.
“He’s got power and he’s very aggressive,” said Vick, who had been momentarily taken aback by Perez’s appearance.
“But I think I will be too technical and too experienced for him. I have multiple ways to win this fight, he has one. I think I dominate this fight and probably it ends inside the distance, with my hand raised.”
