Near-death experience from drug overdose brought John Mabrey to mixed martial arts
John Mabrey, 34, of Wilmington, Delaware fights out of 302 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and will be making his mixed martial arts debut against Billy Conway, also stepping into the cage for the very first time.
He became fascinated with MMA after watching the very first UFC event in 1993.
The following for the sport would lead him to high school wrestling, however from there things took a turn for the worse.
Mabrey became heavily addicted to alcohol and drugs, nearly costing him everything.
“I really let myself go and became a hopeless drug addict,” he said in the promo video put out by CFFC.
I caught up with Mabrey earlier today, just one day before he steps on the scales to weigh-in for his first MMA contest. He expanded earlier on his demons earlier today when I spoke with him.
“About six years I OD’d on drugs. I was found but I wasn’t breathing,” he said.
Now, after six years of maintaining sobriety Mabrey is back in the gym and ready to compete.
“It’s been a dream of mine to compete in a real mixed martial arts fight. That’s why I’m here,” he said.
