Jon Jones to undergo surgery today to repair torn pectoral tendon
UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones will undergo surgery today to repair a torn pectoral tendon that forced him out of the UFC 295 main event next month.
Jones, 36, was injured while training to defend his title against former champion Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden on November 11.
“Obviously, very sad situation, very upset,” Jones said in an apology message. “But I’ve been through a lot of things in life, and injuries are a part of being an athlete. I want to thank the UFC for getting me in to one of the best doctors in the country. I wanted to say thank you to Stipe Miocic for all the work that he’s put in. Also, sorry to Stipe and his team. Like I said, this comes with the territory.”
As a result of his removal from the card, Miocic has also been removed and an interim title bout between Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall has been announced as the new co-main event while another title bout between former champions Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira was elevated to the main spot.
Following recovery from surgery, Jones will also need several months of physical therapy. It is estimated that he will be sidelined eight months.
