Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic “makes sense” for summer UFC fight, says Dana White
A matchup between former UFC champions Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic “makes sense” for a fight this summer, says UFC president Dana White.
Jones hasn’t competed since a decision win over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 in February 2020. Since then, Jones vacated his UFC light heavyweight champion and he announced a move up to the heavyweight division. However, between the COVID-19 pandemic, legal issues outside of the cage, and other factors, Jones has not stepped into the cage in over two years. However, there have been rumors floating around that Jones could return to the Octagon this summer, and according to White, that is what the UFC is hoping for.
Speaking to TMZ Sports in a recent interview, White suggested that Jones’ return date could be this summer. If Jones does fight again, he suggested a matchup against the former UFC heavyweight champion Miocic, who himself has not fought since getting knocked out by Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 last March.
“I was just telling someone the other day that our lineup for this summer is incredible. I’m hoping that Jon Jones is going to be a part of that lineup this summer,” White said. “Stipe makes sense.”
Both Jones and Miocic have teased a potential matchup against one another on social media and in interviews. If the fight does happen, it would take place at heavyweight and could potentially be for an interim title with Ngannou currently out on the sidelines with a knee injury. It would be a matchup featuring arguably the best heavyweight and light heavyweight in UFC history against each other. Even though it’s no longer a super fight since neither man has a belt anymore, it would still be an absolutely massive fight.
Do you hope that Dana White and the UFC books Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic, and if the fight does happen, who would you pick to win it?
