Jose Aldo confident he’ll get a title shot with a win over Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278
Jose Aldo believes he will get a title shot with a win at UFC 278.
Aldo is set to face Merab Dvalishvili on the main card of the pay-per-view from Salt Lake City, Utah in a very intriguing bantamweight bout. Although the Brazilian thought he should be fighting for the belt now, he is excited about the matchup but knows with a win here his next fight has to be for the title.
“I actually think that I (should’ve been) fighting for the title,” Aldo said at UFC 278 media day. “I wanted to fight Aljo (Aljamain Sterling), but he’s going for Dillashaw. I believe if I win this fight, I am actually then the next one up to fight for the belt.”
Should Aldo pull off the upset and defeat Dvalishvili at UFC 278, he is confident he will get the chance to face the winner of Aljamain Sterling vs. TJ Dillashaw next. According to the former featherweight king, he believes he would be facing Sterling as he thinks the champ will defend his belt at UFC 280.
“If we’re going with a pick, I’ll say Aljo (because) for the moment that he’s going through in his career,” Aldo said. “He’s been fighting at a high level, and also I think Dillashaw had that time when he wasn’t fighting, so I think that goes against him. The moment in which Aljo is fighting, I think he’s the one that’s going to get it.”
Jose Aldo is currently on a three-fight win streak and coming off a decision win over Rob Font in the main event of a Fight Night card last December. Prior to that, he beat Pedro Munhoz, and Marlon Vera by decision to pick up his first bantamweight win after losing to Petr Yan for the belt and losing a controversial decision to Marlon Moraes.
