Jose Aldo out-pressures Marlon Vera – results in Co-main
The Ultimate Fighting Championships holds its final event of 2020 with UFC Fight Night 183 on Saturday, Dec. 19.
Headlining the event are two ranked welterweights in Stephen Thompson and Geoff Neal inside the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The co-main event features a bantamweight affair between the former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (28-7) and the surging Marlon Vera (16-6-1).
The former bantamweight champion, Aldo, has already stated that he wants a title shot with a victory over Aldo is is coming off a title loss against Petr Yan. Conversely, the no. 2 bantamweight and former title challenger, Vera, wants another title shot himself following a victory.
Aldo defeats Vera via decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). Aldo did what he had to do to win this fight. During the early rounds, Aldo was able to strike the body with incredible accuracy. It was gritty at times when Vera pressured and came forward. At the end, it wasn’t enough to take down the former champion.
Round 1:
Vera starts out as a slight underdog with some leg kicks while respecting Aldo’s experience. Aldo is throwing a lot of counter kicks very early in the fight. Vera tries to clinch with Aldo and pushes Aldo back against the fence. Vera throws some high inside knees against Aldo in the clinch. Aldo pushes himself off the cage halfway through the round. The two stand in the center of the cage to trade shots. Toward the end of the round, Aldo is striking like the Aldo of old. Vera looks to flinch every time Aldo winds up for a big strike. The posture of this round has to lean towards Aldo. Vera landed a big leg kick with ten seconds left. Aldo responds with a high leg kick of his own. The first round may be too close to call.
Aldo 10-9 after Round 1
Round 2:
Aldo starts round two with a vicious body combination. It looks like Vera is respecting Aldo’s fight experience maybe a bit too much. Vera keeps getting a lot of his strikes with leg kicks which are stinging Aldo. After a minute in the clinch, Aldo throws Vera off to get back into the center of the Octagon. Vera makes a case at the end of the round again. Still have to believe Aldo has round two because of significant strikes.
Jose Aldo 20-18 after Round 2
Round 3:
Aldo climbs Vera’s back early in the round. Vera is trying to posture and shake Aldo off his body. The fight gets to the ground and Aldo has Vera’s back but hasn’t positioned himself for a finish quite yet. Aldo’s pressure if suffocating Vera and the frustration shows on Vera. Towards the end of the round Vera has Aldo on his back again. Aldo’s body triangle may finish this round for a definitive decision victory.
