Julio Cesar Martinez To Make First Title Defense Against Jay Harris

Julio Cesar Martinez(15-1, 12 KOs), the WBC Flyweight champion, will defend his belt against Jay Harris (17-0 9 KOs) on February 29th. The fight will take place at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. The fight will also be on DAZN live in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Martinez won the title right before Christmas when he beat Cristofer Rosales in Phoenix, Arizona. The newly crowned champion is wasting no time getting back in action, joining the card headlined by Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas.

Jay Harris comes into the title shot undefeated. His last fight he traveled to Paddy Barnes back yard and knocked him out inside of four. Harris’ win over the former Olympian set him up for a big fight and now it’s paying off for the Welshman.

Julio Cesar Martinez Ready To Be Back in Action

Martinez is excited to have a quick turnaround. He is ready to represent his country again, but this time as a champion.

“I’m so happy to be back fighting so soon, especially on such a huge show in Frisco,” said Martinez. “It was a special moment become World Champion but now I must continue to work hard and defend my title with honor for my people of Mexico”

Jay Harris is simply grateful for the opportunity to fight for a world title. He knows how great of a fighter Martinez is and is doing everything he can to prepare for the fight.

“I want to say a big thanks to Matchroom and MTK global for giving me the opportunity to fight for the WBC title in Frisco on such a big event,” said Harris. “Julio is a great young fighter but I am feeling in the form of my life and this gives me the opportunity to shock the world.”

Eddy Reynoso also weighed in on Martinez coming back so quickly.

“It’s perfect to have Julio back fighting so quickly, it all part of developing him as a fighter,” said Eddy Reynoso, Sport and Talent director at Canelo Promotions. “He has so much potential and I believe he is going to dominate and unify the division in time. First we must overcome this challenge on Feb 29 in Frisco”

Eddie Hearn Putting Together Another Great Card

Matchroom promoter, Eddie Hearn, is very optimistic about Martinez’s career. He is excited to see what the Mexican’s title reign entails and this is the first step into that future. But Hearn warns, Harris is a good fighter and shouldn’t be overlooked.

“Julio is just brilliant to watch and the fans in Frisco are in for a real treat as this new Mexican star makes the first defense of his World title,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Jay Harris has impressed lately, looking great last time out knocking out Paddy Barnes and capturing the Commonwealth and European titles. The styles should gel perfectly here for a real fan friendly war on what promises to be a huge night of boxing.”
