Kamaru Usman explains why he is the No. 1 P4P fighter in the UFC
UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman explained why he is the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter that is currently fighting for the promotion.
Following UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski’s dominant win over Max Holloway at UFC 276, there are many observers of the sport who believe that Volkanovski has surpassed Usman and become the sport’s top P4P fighter. Similarly, many feel that UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya could be at the top of the P4P food chain. The UFC rankings currently have Usman ranked at No. 1 and Volkanovski at No. 2, with Adesanya at No. 3, but there are many who believe the three of them could be interchangeable.
Usman, however, believes he has done everything in his power to be the No. 1 P4P fighter in the UFC. Speaking to ESPN MMA in a recent interview, Usman explained why he is the top fighter in the game right now. According to the champ, he’s been doing it most “spectacularly.”
“(Not every) pound-for-pound fighter in the world can step in there three times in a year and put on three spectacular – not just spectacular performances, put on three humungous performances. And if you don’t believe me, you can ask the company what the numbers were for those three fights combined. So it’s not just being able to go in there and do it – not just be able to do it, do it spectacularly. “And I think right now I’m the best at doing that, even though it’s a very, very slim margin. You know, I love all these guys. Volkanovski, just a great guy – love him. Izzy, as well. These are all my guys,” Usman said (via MMAjunkie.com).
Usman will step back into the Octagon in August when he takes on top contender Leon Edwards in his next welterweight title defense. With a dominant victory, he can once again remind everyone why he’s the top P4P fighter in the sport, and why it’s not Volkanovski or Adesanya.
Do you agree with Kamaru Usman that he is the No. 1 P4P fighter in MMA over the likes of Alexander Volkanovski and Israel Adesanya?
