Kelvin Gastelum officially announces move back down to welterweight: ‘I think that I can make another title run at that weight class’
Kelvin Gastelum will be returning to welterweight.
After Gastelum returned to the win column with a decision win over Chris Curtis at UFC 287, he hinted at a possible move back down to welterweight. He had started his career out at 170lbs but moved up to 185lbs due to him struggling to make the weight.
Yet, after some struggles at middleweight, as Gastelum is 2-5 in his last seven, he will be going back down to welterweight. According to Gastelum, he believes this is a rebirth of his career and thinks he can go on a title run at welterweight.

“I’m making an official announcement, an official drop to 170. Expect my next fight to be at 170. I’m going to get shredded, I hope. I think that I can make another title run at that weight class. I think I can make it,” Gastelum said on social media. “Why this time and why now and not before? It’s like I said, this is a second chance. This is a renaissance in my career. This is a rebirth. Before, I was young and dumb. I was stupid and undisciplined. Now that I’m older, hopefully, I’ll be a little more mature and smarter, hopefully. Everybody knows this has always been my weight class to go to, but it really just takes me to decide that I want to do it, and now I’ve decided that I want to do it, and I’m going to do it.”
As of right now, it’s uncertain when Kelvin Gastelum will be making his return to welterweight and who he will be fighting in his debut. But, when he is booked, there will be a lot of intrigue on weigh-in day to see if he makes it and how he looks on the scale.
Gastelum will be returning to welterweight after beating Curtis by decision and before that, lost two straight to Jared Cannonier and Robert Whittaker.
