Khamzat Chimaev calls for Stephen Thompson as next opponent

Khamzat Chimaev has not be shy when it comes to grabbing headlines since his UFC debut.

Since his introduction at UFC Fight Island, Chimaev has recorded three first round finishes in just over two months, not to mention his opponents collectively only landed three times on the Swedish fighter. Following a 17-second knockout of UFC middleweight Gerald Meerschaert, Chimaev expressed interest in a ranked fighter within the Welterweight division . Rumors had began circulating that Khazmat Chimaev would face Demian Maia before even stepping into the octagon with Meerschaert.  With the deal not yet finalized, Chimaev has been open to possibilities of other ranked Welterweights.

Following his impressive display at UFC Vegas 11, Chimaev took to Twitter to make his wish list of next opponents. Chimaev on Twitter; “Give me Masvidal, Covington, Edward(s), Wonderboy, Demian. They only have different face result will be same. Smash, let’s go.” Seemingly keeping his options open, it’s clear Chimaev has the Welterweights in his sights.

Chimaev has seemingly started to focus his aim at one of the names he dropped in particular. On Tuesday, Stephen Thompson called Leon Edwards out on Twitter in a rather polite manner. Chimaev was clearly not in favour of the two elite strikers coming together however, as he was quick to intervene. “We fighting next leave Leon alone.” It’s unclear if this is Chimaev’s next step to the top, but it is highly likely we will see Chimaev for a fourth time in 2020.
