Lakewood teacher making reprise appearance as pro MMA announcer
Steve Peacock, a Lakewood High School (LHS) language arts teacher, is returning to the mixed martial arts (MMA) cage Feb. 21 as announcer for Global Proving Ground (GPG), a New York City-based promoter that offers professional-fighter competitions internationally as well as locally in Pennsauken.
Peacock, who not only also serves as the voice of the LHS basketball program but is an LHS alumnus and former star football player, made his debut as GPG announcer on Jan. 17. James Jefferson, GPG president and CEO, invited Peacock back as announcer for the companys Feb. 21 Fighters against Spousal Abuse awareness-raising campaign & competition at the GPG Event Center on Route 73 in Pennsauken.
Peacock in 2013 entered the MMA cage for the first time as Gold Medal MMAs Master of Ceremonies for an event at Collins Arena of Brookdale Community College, Monmouth County. He made such an impression on ring announcer Kevin Garvey that the N.J. Martial Arts Hall of Fame member referred him to people in the industry.
Fight Club Champion MMA then selected Peacock in October to serve as announcer for the Fighting for Our Heroes veterans fundraiser at the nearly 200,000 square-feet Jersey City Armoryan intimidating challenge for which Peacock rose to the occasion. Indeed, the organization has since hired Peacock again, this time for the Battle in the Ballroom extravaganza on Feb. 28 in Newark, N.J.,
Peacock sees his role as something far beyond just introducing fighters in the ring, cage and stage. He notes that GPG has a Fighter Code of Conduct, which helps the organization create not only better fighters but better people.
As a fight announcer, I do not simply speak; more importantly, I also sincerely speak up regarding the American ideals of competition and honor. Winning is but a short-term goal; yet the consistent pursuit of excellence — regardless of whether you win or lose a particular bout — is a lifestyle choice, he said.
Consequently, my unique tag line with which I begin each GPG competition is Fight with honor and emerge victorious win or lose. [trademark pending]
