Leon Edwards reveals he’s been promised title shot with win over Tyron Woodley
Leon Edwards has been told he will get a title shot if he beats Tyron Woodley.
Edwards is riding an eight-fight winning streak with his last loss coming to Kamaru Usman back in 2015. After his latest win over Rafael dos Anjos, the Englishman campaigned for a title shot but will have to fight Tyron Woodley instead. Should he gets past the former champ, he will get the rematch he has been after.
“I think Usman is injured at the moment they’re saying. So, if we can fight in March and he’s still free before summer, I think I’ll be the next in line. That’s what written in my contract, that I’ll be the next in line,” Edwards said to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter,(via BJPENN.com). “After beating Tyron Woodley, I will receive a title shot next. After beating him, I’m guaranteed next in line.”
At first, Woodley did not want to take this fight against Edwards in London but ultimately decided to. He’s not fought since March at UFC 235 when he lost his title to Kamaru Usman. He’s looking to rebound here with a win and get back on track.
This could very well be a number one contender bout, where no matter the outcome, the winner gets another crack at Usman.
Before the win over dos Anjos, Leon Edwards earned a split-decision win over Gunnar Nelson. He also beat Donald Cerrone by decision in his first main event spot in the Las Vegas-based promotion back in 2018.
Currently, Kamaru Usman is out with an injury. But, every day he and Jorge Masvidal take shots at one another online. So, it appears that his next title defense might be against Masvidal. So, if Edwards does win, his title shot may not come until later on in 2020. Or perhaps he will have to fight another one.
