Mackenzie Dern Submits Nina Ansaroff In Round One At UFC Vegas 23

The UFC returns to us this evening with UFC Vegas 23, headlined by top ten ranked middleweight talents Marvin Vettori and Kevin Holland.

The main event was initially had Vettori slated against Darren Till, but Till withdrew with an injury and was replaced by Holland about ten days ago. Co-headlining the event is a very intriguing featherweight bout between Arnold Allen and Sodiq Yusuff.

Allen comes into the bout ranked at No. 10 in the world at 145 lbs, while Yusuff comes in ranked at No. 11. This should be a very telling fight to see where each of these young men are at in their careers.

The second bout on the main card was contested in the women’s strawweight division between the returning Nina Ansaroff, and the ultra-talented Mackenzie Dern, who went 3-0 with two Submission of the Year candidates in 2020.

Ansaroff has been out since her unanimous decision defeat to Tatiana Suarez back in June of 2019, as she’s been on maternity leave.

Official Result: Mackenzie Dern def. Nina Ansaroff via submission (armbar) at 4:48 of round one

Round 1

Dern comes out and takes the center once the bout starts, and before too long, she secures double overhooks on Ansaroff. She ends up dropping down for a single leg, and trips Ansaroff’s other leg in order to secure the takedown.

Dern falls into Ansaroff’s guard, but gradually passes to mount, where she reigns down a number of punches and elbows from the top. She eventually settles on going for Ansaroff’s arm, and beautifully secures the submission with about ten seconds left in the round.

After an incredible 2020, Mackenzie Dern is off to a great start in 2021 as well!

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
