Macy Chiasson opens up nasty cut, stops Mayra Bueno Silva in war at UFC 303

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, June 29, 2024, for UFC 303, going down live from the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.

Headlining the event is a light-heavyweight championship rematch between current champion Alex Pereira (10-2) and no. 1 ranked former champion Jiri Prochazka (30-4-1).

Co-headlining the event is a 165 lb catchweight bout between a pair of featherweight contenders in no. 13 ranked Dan Ige (18-7) and no. 14 ranked Diego Lopes (24-6), a literal last minute replacement as no. 3 ranked former title challenger Brian Ortega withdrew from his scheduled clash with Lopes with a fever just a couple short hours ago.

Our second main card clash tonight came in the bantamweight division between no. 3 ranked former title challenger Mayra Bueno Silva (10-4-1) and no. 7 ranked Macy Chiasson (10-3).

Silva came in off her title shot against Raquel Pennington in January, a fight she went into on a four-fight unbeaten streak, while Chiasson came in off a stoppage victory over Pannie Kianzad following a near two-year absence from the cage.

Official Result: Macy Chiasson def. Mayra Bueno Silva via TKO (doctor stoppage) at 1:58 of round two

Silva absolutely battered Chiasson throughout the opening round, beginning with a knee to the body followed by a right elbow upstairs in the opening minute. Both women landed a series of knees to the body in the clinch on multiple occasions and really just went to war.

Silva also landed a wheel kick and a number of punches to the body through the opening five minutes.

They got right back to it once the second round started, Chiasson of which took an opportunity to take Silva down to the ground. She then landed a nasty elbow that opened up a cut over Silva’s eye, forcing the referee to call the doctor in who ultimately stopped the fight.

This was turning into the best fight of the night, it’s unfortunate that it had to be stopped. But, this was a great fight between two very talented women and it was a big win for Macy Chiasson, who’s now gone 2-0 since returning earlier this year.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
