Malik Lewis looks to make the UFC on Dana White’s Contender Series
Malik Lewis is back for another opportunity at a UFC contract.
On Sept. 12, Lewis will be fighting James Llontop on Dana White’s Contender Series. The fight will be the sixth episode of the current season.
Typically when a fighter gets a call that they’ll be on Dana White’s Contender Series, they are excited as they know UFC president Dana White will be watching them and if they impress the boss with a win, then they’ll be in the UFC.
Lewis isn’t one of the excited fighters, because he knows exactly what the show is all about.
Last year, in the shows sixth season, Lewis fought on the show and started out great in his fight against Trevor Peek. Unfortunately for Lewis, Peek would catch him with a punch in the second round and would go on to finish Lewis.
The loss hurt for Lewis as it marked his first and only loss of his young career.
Now Lewis is approaching his upcoming fight as a business trip and he doesn’t want to let the opportunity slide away from him.
Ever since the loss last year, Lewis has been grinding away everyday at the world renown Jackson Wink MMA in New Mexico in the hopes of getting another crack at a UFC contract.
Back in February, Lewis fought in his first fight since the loss in the Peak Fighting promotion in New Mexico and he rebounded nicely.
In the fight, Lewis would knockout Paulo Silva in the third round of their fight and with the win, Lewis became a two-time lightweight champion in the Peak Fighting promotion.
With the fight coming up, Lewis is keeping himself sharp in the gym and he plans on leaving the UFC Apex with a UFC contract.
Ahead of the fight, Lewis spoke with MyMMANews to discuss his upcoming fight, what it means to get a second chance on the show and his training at Jackson Wink MMA.
