Manager: Conor McGregor’s priority is MMA but ‘boxing is definitely something he plans on doing’
Conor McGregor is focused on MMA for now, but according to his manager, Audie Attar, he’s still interested in boxing again.
McGregor made his professional boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather in the summer of 2017 where he suffered a TKO loss. It was a highly-anticipated fight, where since then, rumors have swirled of a Mayweather rematch or a bout against Manny Pacquiao.
In MMA, meanwhile, McGregor returned to the win column with a 40-second knockout win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. It was his first fight since he lost by submission to Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Since the win, he’s been calling out the likes of Nurmagomeodv and Gaethje, so according to Attar, MMA is the Irishman’s priority.
“I think he’s thinking MMA first,” Attar said to MMAJunkie. “Boxing is definitely something he plans on doing, but I think he’s thinking MMA first. And who the opponent is, it could be (Justin Gaethje or Tony Ferguson), it could be someone else. It just depends on how things play out and where he wants to take it. Ultimately, I think all the fans want to see him fight. So, it doesn’t matter who he fights – he’ll fight someone.
“Whether he fights (Gaethje) or whether he fights another opponent, we will see. Let’s see how this thing plays out and let’s see how discussions go and then as it relates to him fighting Manny or any other boxer in the future, that’s always a possibility.”
Who Conor McGregor will fight next and when he will compete again is to be seen. But, the Irishman has options according to Attar.
“I think at the end of the day, he is an amazing talent, an amazing not only athlete. But personality – and someone fans want to see compete,” Attar concluded. “And ultimately, I think that there’s a few matchups that we can make. It’s just about how things play out and what makes sense.”
