Mario Aguilar finishes Andre Small in main event of wild night at OCL 20
Regional MMA is never without excitement, but Ohio Combat League 20 was a particularly wild night. The 14-fight card went down at the Ohio Event Center in Newark, Ohio, and featured a main event with Mario Aguilar finishing Andre Small via ground and pound in the third round.
The fight card suffered some losses before it even started, losing the main and co-main event during weigh-ins. But the fights that did happen all delivered.
Travon Eller gave fans a memorable moment, putting Tyler Gates to sleep with one of the best knockouts they’ll probably ever see in just nine seconds. He hit Gates with a left hand that staggered him, and then a right that timbered the 6’6″ fighter to the mat. The hometown crowd went absolutely crazy for Eller, who improved his record to 2-0.
Not to be outdone, Dylan Rinck finished Logun Gilbreath in the co-main event via punches to take home the amateur heavyweight title. It was his fourth win in five outings to move his record to 7-3 with five knockouts.
Aguilar won his third straight bout in a grinding performance against Small, who kept things close using his clench game throughout the fight. Aguilar continued to create separation throwing punches, and also landed timely takedowns. The end came in the third round with another takedown, with Aguilar eventually getting to mount and finishing the fight with ground and pound.
Two women’s bouts earlier in the night also ended via stoppage, with Aguilar’s Scorpion Fighting System teammate Tiffany Woltmann picking up her first victory with a third round TKO over Stephanie Alomar. West Virginia’s Sarah Flowers also put on a dominant performance with a TKO stoppage from punches in the mount to move to 3-0.
Another fighter who moved to 3-0 was Quintin Richards, who locked in a hybrid triangle/kimura to force John Leark to tap just 1:15 in the first round. Anthony Jagel also moved to 3-0 topping 3-1 fighter Brandan Donaldson with a rear naked choke in the first round.
Tyler Dogoda and Ahmad Ahmad put on a memorable fight of the night performance, with Dogoda continuing to rein down blows despite blood streaming from his nose from early in the fight. He hung tough and eventually earned a unanimous decision victory on the strength of pinpoint striking.
