Matchmaker Monday following UFC Vegas 7
Welcome to bantamweight Frankie Edgar. On Saturday at UFC Vegas 7, Edgar showed that he still has it in him to make a championship run as he squeezed out a split decision win over Pedro Munhoz.
Saturday’s main event was an amazing fight and both Edgar and Munhoz showed just why bantamweight maybe the best division in the whole UFC.
Now let’s find out what’s next for these two men on this Matchmaker Monday.
Frank Edgar
Result: defeated Pedro Munhoz by split decision at UFC Vegas 7
Next: Winner of Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen
Kudos to Edgar on winning in his bantamweight debut in what was a great back-and-forth battle that could have went either way.
Up next I feel like Edgar should fight the winner of Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen in what could be a possible title elimination fight.
With that being said let me briefly explain how this division is going to go over the next few months. New bantamweight king Petr Yan will fight Aljamain Sterling. If Cody Garbrandt wins his featherweight title fight in November he’ll face the winner of Yan and Sterling. That then the leaves Edgar and the Moraes vs. Sandhagen winner as the next in line after that. If Garbrandt loses then the Edgar and the Moraes vs. Sandhagen winner may get the shot even sooner.
Pedro Munhoz
Result: lost to Frankie Edgar split decision at UFC Vegas 7
Next: loser of Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen
Munhoz didn’t lose any stock with the loss. The fight was so close that if Munhoz won nobody would of complained. It was one of those fights where when you’re watching it you say to yourself “thank God I’m not the judge for this fight because these rounds are so close.”
So given at how close it was I don’t feel like Munhoz should really drop in the rankings or have to fight somebody ranked behind him. That’s why I’m going with him fighting the loser of Moraes and Sandhagen.
I think you could also throw Jose Aldo into the mix as a possible opponent for Munhoz, but given that both fighters are Brazilian that fight may not happen because sometimes we see Brazilians avoid fighting their fellow countrymen.
