Matt Wiman returns after near five year layoff, fights at UFC Greenville
When Matt Wiman (16-7) steps into the octagon this weekend at UFC Greenville, it will be the first time “Handsome” has competed professionally since November 2014.
Wiman, who withdrew from a March 2015 fight against Leonardo Santos due to a back injury, will square up against Luis Pena (6-1).
Both Wiman and Pena were competitors on the Ultimate Fighter, although in two entirely different seasons.
“Handsome” Wiman appeared on season 5 of the series where he would be coached by future UFC Hall of Famer, B.J. Penn. Fast forward 11 years and Pena would find himself on season 27.
Wiman has won four ‘Fight of the Night’ awards and also a ‘Submission of the Night.’ The 35-year-old made his UFC debut in 2006 and compiled a 10-5 record within the promotion.
The two men will meet in a lightweight contest at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, this Saturday, June 22. The card is headlined by a featherweight matchup between Renato Moicano and Chan Sung Jung. The evening’s main card will air on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN2.
