Max Holloway outpoints Yair Rodriguez to UD victory at UFC Vegas 42

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to the Apex Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, tonight, November 13, 2021, for UFC Fight Night 197, also known as UFC Vegas 42.

Headlining the event is a featherweight contest between former champion Max Holloway and fellow top contender Yair Rodriguez.

Holloway is coming off his dominant victory over Calvin Kattar in January, while Rodriguez defeated Jeremy Stephens in his last outing back in October of 2019.

Many are thinking Holloway will run right through Rodriguez, but let’s analyze it a little bit first.

Rodriguez, though he’s been out for a while, is one of the best, most creative, and most dangerous strikers in the whole sport. Holloway himself is a striker, which leads us to believe this will be a stand up fight.

Rodriguez has never lost a fight that took place entirely on the feet yet. Will he keep that a truth here tonight?

Official Result: Max Holloway def. Yair Rodriguez via unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 48-47)

Holloway came out ready to put on the pressure, as Rodriguez gets his own shots off going backwards.

The former champion controls the majority of the fight with his striking, though he spends the second half of round three mounted on Rodriguez, a result of a deep guillotine attempt.

The former champion was close to finishing the fight right then and there, but Rodriguez intelligently fell to his back.

Rodriguez was able to land a good amount throughout the fight, including a spinning elbow, an front upward elbow, some knees to Holloway’s face, and a few nasty upkicks. He did much better tonight than most anticipated he would,, but it wasn’t enough. The former champion proves once again why he’s next in line for the belt, and a trilogy with champion Alexander Volkanovski.

He could’ve sat out and waited, but chose to stay active instead, which has turned out to be a great choice.

When would you like to see Volkanovski vs Holloway III go down?

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
