Mayra Bueno Silva picks up third-straight submission finish, defeats Holly Holm in UFC Vegas 77 main event

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, July 15, 2023, for UFC Vegas 77, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Headlining the event was a bantamweight clash between no. 3 ranked former champion Holly Holm (15-7) and no. 10 ranked Mayra Bueno Silva (11-2-1).

Holm came into the bout having gone 3-1 over her latest four appearances, only losing a disputed split decision to no. 4 ranked Ketlen Vieira in that time, while Silva came in on a three-fight win streak.

Official Result: Mayra Bueno Silva def. Holly Holm via submission (ninja choke) at :38 of round two

Holm spends a good portion of the opening round pressing Silva into the fence. She also picks her apart from the outside, though Silva does land two good left hands throughout the first five minutes.

Silva lands a hard right hand to begin the second and Holm presses her into the fence once again. This time however, Silva wraps her neck up in a front choke, which is very tight. From here it only took a matter of seconds before Holm was forced to tap.

Mayra Bueno Silva has now won her last four-straight fights, this being her third-straight submission finish. She submitted Gillian Robertson in her UFC debut back in 2018, and she just defeated the first world champion of her career tonight at UFC Vegas 77.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
