Nick Maximov overcomes adversity in victory over Puna Soriano at UFC Vegas 47

Nick Maximov victorious

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, February 5, 2022 for UFC Vegas 47, headlined by middleweight contenders Jack Hermansson and Sean Strickland.

Co-headlining the event is also a middleweight contest, this one between rising prospects Puna Soriano and Nick Maximov.

Soriano is one of the brighter young prospects in the sport, as is Maximov. That’s why this is such a great job of matchmaking.

Soriano is a heavy-hitting Hawaiian with a record of 8-1 coming in, while Maximov is a stud wrestler, and Diaz protégé, coming in with a record of 7-0.

Continue reading to see how this epic middleweight co-main event went down:

Official Result: Nick Maximov def. Puna Soriano via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 29-28)

Maximov tries for an early takedown and is immediately stuffed, but after a couple minutes into round one, he takes Soriano’s back in a scramble and holds it for the remainder of the round.

Round two is a much different story, however.

Soriano is able to stuff Maximov’s initial takedown attempt once again, and this time Maximov falls to his back, a sign of fatigue. It appeared he was fading badly whilst shooting on a number of takedowns. Though the round was back and forth, Soriano certainly got the better of it with his striking.

The third round comes around and Maximov secures a takedown. Soriano is down for a couple minutes, until he gets up. However, though he’s made it back to his feet, he’s still being controlled along the fence.

This has become quite the grueling encounter, as Maximov appears to have made it to 2-0 inside the octagon.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
