ONE Championship postpones May events due to COVID-19
ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced via Facebook, “BREAKING NEWS: All May events for ONE Championship will be postponed until further notice due to the recent COVID-19 developments (border closings and lockdowns) across most countries in Asia. Our highest priority remains the safety and health of our athletes, officials, staff, fans, and the public during these challenging times. My team and I are working around the clock on multiple options to bring back our events as soon as safely possible. Stay tuned for news! #WeAreONE”
The promotion has tried different methodologies to put on shows in the era of coronavirus. ONE Championship was looking to hold several empty arena events. ONE King of the Jungle was an empty arena event that seemingly went smoothly for them in late-February. It seemed to give MMA fans a glimmer of hope that MMA events without fans could possibly be a thing for ONE in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, travel complications nixed the plans to have MMA events, sans fans. ONE had also previously rolled out a line of cancellations for all of their April events.
ONE Postpones all May events
Since the COVID-19 situation has not improved a great deal, ONE has postponed all events in May.
One of the postponed shows was the stacked ONE: Infinity card. Several title fights were lined up for that May 29th event. The return of UFC legend Mighty Mouse was slated for this late May martial arts extravaganza. #1 ranked Flyweight Demetrious Johnson was expected to take on Adriano Moraes for the ONE flyweight world championship. The promotion looks to move these bouts to future cards. But nothing concrete has been specified as of yet.
ONE Championship is looking to get back to it this Summer though. The next scheduled event is slated for June 5th and emanates from Jakarta, Indonesia.
