ONE Figurehead on if Xiong Jing Nan’s Future Is Strawweight or Atomweight
Whether Xiong Jing Nan’s Future Is Strawweight or Atomweight is a bit up in the air right now.
Nan just defended her ONE strawweight championship for the sixth time and in the coming days, her reign will hit the four-year mark. She is not only the promotion’s inaugural titleholder but the only person who has ever held that crown.
Xiong Jing Nan secured the unanimous decision victory over Ayaka Miura in the main event of ONE: Heavy Hitters on January 14th.
I spoke with ONE figurehead Chatri Sityodtong at the post-event media day about what’s next for The Panda.
Xiong Jing Nan’s Future Is Strawweight or Atomweight
Xiong Jing Nan clearing out the ONE strawweights and if she’s next to fight the winner of Stamp Fairtex vs Angela Lee for the ONE atomweight title
“Yeah I mean, I think people want to see the trilogy fight between (Xiong) Jing Nan and Angela (Lee). I will say that we have signed a bunch of strawweights. World-class strawweights, real contender type of material. We have signed several incredible female athletes in the strawweight division. She has cleaned out the current strawweights. But there is a whole new slew. A whole army of new world-class strawweights that will be a handful for Jing Nan.”
“But yeah, one of the things I think we would love to see is potentially the winner of Angela and Stamp (Fairtex) facing Jing Nan. But again, I’d have to talk to the athletes. We just got done with the event. Plus to be honest, I don’t know. Jing Nan used to be a knock-out artist, come with huge gameness, real killer instinct. And her last two performances, it hasn’t been the same Jing Nan. It’s been very flat, very cautious, and safe. Which is not her nature as a person as an athlete, and it’s very surprising.”
