Raquel Pennington calls for rematch against Amanda Nunes following win at UFC Vegas 67
UFC women’s bantamweight contender Raquel Pennington called for a rematch against champion Amanda Nunes following her recent win at UFC Vegas 67.
Pennington is coming off of a split decision win over Ketlen Vieira, a victory that will push her closer to the top of the weight class. Pennington has now won five fights in a row, which is one of the longest win streaks in her division, and she is 6-2 overall in her last eight fights since she fought Nunes back in 2018. That first fight was a complete beatdown in favor of Nunes, but Pennington believes that she has earned the right to get another shot at the champion and her belt.
Speaking to reporters following UFC Vegas 67, Pennington called for a rematch with Nunes before the end of 2023.
“I don’t feel like I should be denied anymore. A five-fight win streak, how much more are people going to keep denying me? I feel like the respect needs to be put on my name at this point. Obviously I don’t have control of it, I would love to fight for the world title before the year’s over. If that doesn’t happen, then my ultimate goal is to be the No. 1 in the world and then start 2024 right. But, I’m ready to go,” Pennington said (via MMAjunkie.com).
Considering Vieira would have likely been next in line for a title shot had she beat Pennington, there is certainly a chance that the American gets another title shot against her Brazilian rival. That being said, the first fight between the two was not competitive at all, so it’s hard to say how much the fans would be interested in this rematch. But it isn’t stopping Pennington from at least asking for it.
