Report: Garbrandt vs. Assuncao Slated For June
It seems like Cody Garbrandt and Raphael Assuncao will be duking it out this Summer. A report from Damon Martin MMAFighting about Garbrandt vs. Assuncao was later confirmed by MMA Junkie. The unnamed MMA Junkie source relayed this information on the condition of anonymity. UFC has yet to officially announce the bout. The two were initially supposed to fight at the end of March. But that did not end up coming to fruition. Rampant event cancellations have led to this bout being put on the backburner. That will purportedly change in a few weeks.
Garbrandt Vs Assuncao
The location of this event is not the only thing up in the air here. We do know the projected event date is June 6th. But the presently unnamed event has may question marks remaining. For the former divisional kingpin Cody Garbrandt it may be his final foray in the bantamweight class. There has been a lot of dialogue lately about him going to flyweight and a trip to 125 lbs seems to be the next step, post-Assuncao. On the heels of three straight defeats and a year of inactivity, the onus is on Garbrandt to show out in this outing.
For Raphael Assuncao, it represents a chance for the top five stalwart to get a big W. Something that can help him climb higher into a stacked contendership queue with names like Marlon Moraes, Aljamain Sterling, Petr Yan, and Cory Sandhagen. At 37 years old and coming off of back to back defeats for the first time in a decade, it is truly a crossroads moment in the career of the Brazilian bantamweight. It looks like several intriguing bouts will be going down in the coming weeks. At least if the MMA gods remain benevolent.
