Stephen Thompson on Darren Till fight: "If Darren Till fight wasn't in Liverpool I think I would win"

Report: Main and co-main event fights booked for UFC London

The UFC’s return to London is reportedly getting two very good and entertaining fights for their main and co-main event fights. According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, Dana White has said that Darren Till will face Jorge Masvidal in the main event of the UFC London card which is scheduled to take place on March 16 on ESPN+.

Till will be making his return to the Octagon since his last fight against champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 228. Till came up short in the title fight but the lost to Woodley was the first loss in not just his UFC career, but his professional career overall. Before losing to Woodley, Till was on a four-fight winning streak including wins over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. The scheduled fight against Masvidal will be Till’s second headline slot in England as he previously was in the main event against Thompson at UFC Fight Night 130 in Liverpool, England.

For Masvidal, he finally gets a new fight after he had previously been scheduled to face Nick Diaz at UFC 235. For reasons that were never disclosed, Nick Diaz pulled himself from the fight against Masvidal and left “Gamebred” without an opponent. Masvidal will look to bounce back from a two-fight losing streak in his last two contests, which both came as decision losses. Prior to the losing streak, Masvidal found himself riding a three-fight winning streak with wins over Donald Cerrone, Ross Pearson, and Jake Ellenberger.

As for the co-main event on the London card, Okamoto (per Dana White) reported that Leon Edwards will take on Gunnar Nelson on March 16. England’s own Edwards is the 10th ranked welterweight in the world and currently finds himself on a six-fight winning streak with his most recent win coming as a decision victory over Donald Cerrone. This will be the second straight year that Edwards will fight on St. Patrick’s Day weekend in England, in 2018 he picked up a third-round TKO win over Peter Sobotta at UFC Fight Night 127.

Gunnar Nelson will look to ride his current momentum into the fight against Edwards as he had an impressive win over Alex Oliveira at UFC 231 in early December. Nelson bounced back from a controversial loss to Santiago Ponzinibbio and surgery from a torn ACL to get the win over Oliveira. The fight sets two welterweights ranked inside the Top 15 looking to crack the Top 10 in a very deep division.

UFC London (UFC Fight Night 147) will take place on March 16 at The O2 Arena in London, England and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
