Robbie Lawler pulls off trademark ‘Ruthless’ KO in final bout against Niko Price at UFC 290

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, July 8, 2023, for International Fight Week, where UFC 290 goes down live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Headlining the event is a featherweight title unification bout between undisputed champion Alexander Volkanovski (25-2) and interim champion Yair Rodriguez (15-3).

Co-headlining the event was also a title bout, this one a trilogy coming at 125 lbs between UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno (21-6-2) and no. 2 ranked former RFA flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja (25-5).

Headlining our preliminary card tonight was a showcase of finishers as former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler (30-16, 1 NC) faced off with former FT welterweight champion Nike Price (15-7, 2 NC) in what was to be the last fight of his legendary career.

Lawler had gone 2-5 since losing the belt to Tyron Woodley in 2016, the two wins coming over Donald Cerrone (UD) in 2017 and Nick Diaz (TKO) in 2021, while Price had gone 3-5 (1 NC) over his latest nine appearances with wins over Tim Means (KO), James Vick (KO), and Alex Oliveira (UD); each man had gone 1-1 over their last two outings.

Official Result: Robbie Lawler def. Niko Price via KO (punches) at :39 of round one

Lawler lunges in for two left hands early on, but misses on both attempts. Price comes into his range again not long thereafter, where Lawler initiates a clinch before he starts landing some serious left hands over the top followed by a few uppercuts that KO Price stiff in under a minute.

Robbie Lawler is one of the true Cinderella men in MMA.

There was a point where we all thought he was done, losing to lesser fighters in succession outside of the UFC. But he got his career back together and became a UFC champion with two title defenses. Though he hadn’t done too well in recent fights, it was good to see Lawler go out on a trademark, devastating knockout like he just did. He’s one of the most ruthless knockout artists of all-time, hence the name ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler.

The former champion finishes his career having achieved 22 of his 30 total wins via knockout.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
